Hey there Wastelanders! Vault Boy here!

While wandering the Capitol Wasteland I’m sure you’ve encountered a number of ways to meet an untimely doom. Be it Raiders, Deathclaws, or Super Mutants, it seems there is always something trying to kill you. Oftentimes though we forget about the environment itself. We here at Vault-Tec are committed to your safety. Recently, we have found that the environment accounts for 42% of all Wasteland deaths! In order to keep you safe we have compiled a list of 5 things to avoid while wandering the Wastes!

1. Heavily Radiated Areas

Areas of heavy radiation can be very detrimental to your health. Always be aware of the dosimeter on your Pip-Boy! If you’re in a area where radiation is heavy the dosimeter will begin ticking and inform you how much radiation your body is taking in. While it may not seem like much at first, prolonged exposure can result in mutations or even death. If you find yourself irradiated contact a doctor or use RadAway immediately!

2. Overpasses or Other High Areas

One of the easiest ways to die in the Wastes is to fall from a very high place. The ruins of our once thriving civilization can be very dangerous if you’re not careful. If you must traverse an overpass or building always be mindful of your footing. If possible check that the building is structurally sound before entering. If you do fall and survive always keep a round chambered. You may need to save yourself from even greater pain later.

3. Contaminated Water

While death through dehydration can be quite a terrible fate, death through irradiated water can be even worse. Your Pip-Boy dosimeter will let you know how irradiated a water source is if you find yourself thirsty with no other options. The easiest way to avoid drinking contaminated water is to carry purified or bottled water with you.

4. Minefields

Though mines were not an original part of our environment they are now. Whether left from the Chinese invasion or a product of a paranoid Wastelander mines now litter the ground throughout the waste. Mines can be spotted from a distance by their distinctive red light. If you posses the skill you can disarm the mines by approaching them and flipping a small switch. This requires immense skill though and is very dangerous. Put simply, if you enjoy your body being whole you should just avoid minefields.

5. The Wilderness

While the wilderness itself isn’t actually dangerous a number of creatures make their home here, which is why it should be avoided. Deathclaws, Mirelurks, and Yao Guais all reside within the woods of the waste. If you have to enter the outskirts of civilization always carry adequate munition.
